How an Invasive Species Can Affect the Ecosystem of the Great Lakes

Sixth grade students recently began a study of the Great Lakes Ecosystems. They have completed a web quest titled, "How an Invasive Species Can Affect the Ecosystems of the Great Lakes". The web quest involves students reading and discussing six proposed solutions to the invasion of Asian Carp. They have to respond to the following:

1.  Indicate which solution (out of the 6 listed) you feel would be the best choice for keeping Asian Carp from entering the Great Lakes.

2.  Explain why you chose that particular solution.  Consider public safety, economic impact, cost of implementation, etc. when explaining your choice.

View students responses by reading the comments to this blog post.

Me(Kayla) and my partner(Eryn) have decided that the best solution to the Asian Carp problem is to eat them. We have decided that this is the best choice inviromentally. We think the other solutions are bad and not safe. The other choices were:
1.)Close the dam
4.)Pelicans
5.)Bubbling Nitrogen
6.)Poison
We think that those are all terible because if they close the dam boats won’t be able to get through.
If we use pelicans we would have to get rid of them later because there might be an investasion just like the asian carp.
If they used bubbling nitrogen it would kill We think that those are all terible because if they close the dam boats won’t be able to get through.
If we use pelicans we would have to get rid of them later because there might be an investasion just like the asian carp.
If they used bubbling nitrogen it would kill the other aquatic life.
If we put poison in the water it would also kill the other aquatic life.
It would be bad for the inviroment all of those other ways except EATING THEM!=D

Asian Carp
We think they should put a wire mesh at the end of the river when it goes into the lake so the Asian carp will not get into the lake. It will protect the people from the Asian carp because there are no Asian carp in the lakes. When the fish get cought they will be taken out so it will make more jobs for people. We don`t think that people will have to move away. We think it cost 1 millon dollors to build it. Over the years it will probably count up to 3 million dollars.

I Matthew Groulx, think that the option of eating them would be the right choice. The other choices like the electric thing would probably kill other fish if any. Also, the pelican one would never kill them all. Wait! Maybe, we could use the electric wall thing and kill about 99% of the Asian carp then let us eat the rest hopefully getting an extra 1% to the equation! Then there would be no other Asian carp left! But, it gets better, using the electric wall plus us eating them won’t hurt our day to day activates or lifestyle! And if you don’t live near where they are the market could sell it. The only thing that will cost is the electric wall and barely any for getting the fish.

We think we should make a natural substance that will force the Asian carp to leave the Great Lakes. It wouldn’t kill them, but it would chase them to other waters where they are as many. They are eating all of our good fish and are eliminating their food chain. We should use big nets with large holes in them. The Asian carp will be caught, but all the smaller fish will fall through.

Our solution to the problwm will not harm people unless the Carp were to jump out and attack them. Our solution is that we make a license that allows you to fish the Carp.We think it will not have a bad effect on the econamy because it will allow more people will have to move to the Lake Michigan , but would take away the carp. So it could have a bad and good effect. To keep it running we would need at least $ 1,000 a year.We belive it is because we are getting rid of invaseve spiecs.

By Gabe and Daniel I think if more birds come in to the lakes we would have an opprotunity to get more karp out. If we dont get them out we wont be able to have our origional spiecies that we know. We get rid of the carp and we repopulate the other fish that live in our great lakes that we have lost. I think the karp is an easy meal for the gulls so if we get more gulls the less karp I think we will have.

The debate whether we should use an electric barrier or a series of dams to keep the carp out of lake Michigan and it wouldn’t help much to build a barrier blocking all fish instead of just the one fish I think a chemical solution would be the best a chemical that only effects the one species.

I think that breeding pelicans to hunt the invasive Asian Carp is the best solution. Asian Carp are an easy prey for pelicans so they can dwindle the population of these fish in North America until they are endangered or even extinct in the great lakes region. It is an inexpensive solution that could even create some jobs (building a breeding enclose, breeders etc.) This solution also has very little negative impact on the environment compared to putting poisons and electric barriers in the water. But of course the pelicans could overpopulate and if this were to happen we could easily put hunting license and bounty on them until the population went back to normal. These carp are known for being rancid and disgusting, so that leaves the only more environmentally friendly option, eating them, out of the question.

Illinois state sen Mike Jacobs has one answer ‘eat them’
It seems likely that the carps are going to get in the lakes ‘let pelicans eat them’
A professor from Michigan tech says ‘use nitrogen bubbles’
The carps will eat all the fish and be caught in fishing
I think it’s a good idea to eat them because they will be food to eat.

We looked at the 6 solutions and thought that solution 4 was not good because you are bringing in pelicans and thats something that shouldn’t be there a nother solution said to posin them but we thought that could hurt people and other fish another one said to eat thembut if you eat them what will they do to? Are they ediable? Can they hurt you? A dam would not allow boaters in and fish could not move thourgh that route to get to spawning grounds. Solution three suggests that they put an electric barrier in but that could hurt us and other fish and how good will it work? The solution I thought was best was the solution that was using the nitrogemnd bubbles, because it is not poisin and wont hurt the enviroment. It may cost a lot of money but it would save the great lakes from the asian carp.some of the solutions are good but not good unuff you need something that will work 100% and it must be efficent.and we think that the nitrogeon bubbles are efcient and that it will work.

Brooke and Baileigh
Public Safety: Our strategy will not harm anyone because the pelicans are eating people, they are eating the Asian Carp.
Economic Impact: Our strategy will not affect the job opportunities of people because the pelicans are eating them so we don’t have to do anything . Also, if people don’t like pelicans than they might have to relocate, but other than that, they won’t have to relocate at all.
Cost of Implemation: It won’t cost anything because the pelicans are eating them and that doesn’t cost any money.

Caylin and Caitlyn
Caylin and I feel that bringing on the pelicans would be one of the best solutions. We feel this is the best solution because we are not just plain killing the fish, but we are feeding a good species of birds. The other Ideas are good but some of them they should think through a little bit more the worst idea that Caylin and I think is the poison because it can kill all the native fish or poison other native animals.

By John and Stephen: We believe the solution to keeping the population of the asian carp down is to bring on the pelicans. Because we feel they will eat some of the over whelming population of the asian carp. we also believe the solution will keep people safe pelicans wont harm you if you dont harm them. We dont believe this solution will effect the economy at all . I beileve it will provide more job opportunities because the pelicans will need to be kapt safe. And individuals will not have to relocated . From what we understand it should not cost to much money.

We decided to pick solution 2 eat them it would cut down the population and feed many people. It will increase the jobs because fishermen will be involved and there will be people to process the fish and you can sell it in stores and in restraints. It will cost 75,000$. by sydney ,ryan ,logan

Mackenzie McIntosh and I (Madeline Cardinal) agree that the best solution was the solution. We agreed on this because, we feel that this is the best solution because, it will decrease the population of Asian carp, and it is a good hobby. Also by doing this, you are not using any poison or chemical in the great lakes.

• Our solution will protect people from being harmed.
• The solution will positively affect the economy.
• This solution will possibly provide jobs for fishermen or people that like to fish.
• No, the community will not have to relocate in order for this solution to be implemented.
• In some cases there will be a price but, in some there will not be a price. You would only need bait and a fishing pole.
• Our solution is NOT expensive( actually it depends on what fishing tools you use)
• It is a reasonable amount to pay to help fix the problem, because you could use the things you used to catch the Asian carp to catch other fish.

Solusions for Asian Carp
Marc and I thought of a solution of our Asian Carp problem. We think that if we had a poisan that would kill only Asian Carp because it would work fast and quicker.

Invasive species
Invasive species affect the environment and how people think about the environment. A example is the Asian Carp, it eats to many types of things that are natural here and that effects the animals that live here. Seaguls might help this problem scientist say. I don’t believe this I believe that they should make a stronger dam. Another solution that might work people say that hunting them and selling there meat for money a person on one of the links said that the Asian Carp is a bad food source because it has a lot of bones and less meat. The Asian Carp comes up threw the long missisippi river and the government of Michigan and a few other states are helping get rid of the Carp.

I think the best solution is to dump fish poison in to the Illinois River. I think my solution will decrease jobs for a little bit because fishermen would have to stop fishing for a while. No one would have to move because they would use fish poison, not people poison. This solution would be very expensive; it would cost about 4.5 billion dollars. The solution would be worth it because all the carp would be dead and our community would be safe. This solution would probably only have to be used once.
